I’ve just gotten off the phone with Kohl’s, and they’ve confirmed that Novel has indeed been recalled. You can bring the device in and receive a full refund.
After some thought, I’ve decided to return my unit and get the refund. I’m going to hold off on the review. I don’t see a reason to write a review that criticizes a device when the manufacturer has already acknowledged the problems and issued a recall.
Update: This is not a hardware recall. (I wish I knew that before I returned it.) Pandigital is having the units pulled so they can install a new update. As soon as the update is ready the Novel will be back on store shelves.

Tech support told me they are simply pulling the units off the shelf at the stores and their technicians are going in and installing the latest firmware and then placing them back up for sale. So if you already have one, or have one coming in the mail, its just a matter of putting the firmware on the device. *There is no hardware recall*. Again, I got the sense that they are super serious about supporting this device.

That was the original plan… well original “recall plan”. But as of Friday they decided they are not giving them back to Kohls and are truly recalling the white 1GB model as the FW update did not correct several issues and the first gen model (so-to-speak) was not as good as PD wanted to have out there. They were rushed by Kohls for Grads and dads promos.
In it’s place however, PD will be shipping Kohls THIS WEEK the black 2GB models that were not slated for release till late July at best. Now, I have this from 3 different Kohs managers – they all said the same thing. they were told Friday that they would NOT be getting the Novels back – the white 1 GB ones at least. Instead to expect a new 2GB black model this week.
For those of us who follow this, were knew of the black one in it’s final design and QA stages but were likely going to settle on the white b/c you just don’t know if late July deadline would turn into Fall or Holidays. With this latest news, we don’t need to settle for the white now.
PD is standing behind their pricing for the white though, offering THAT sale price – I believe through Kohls only – on the black 2GB. Additionally, if you already have the mail in rebate form, you’ll have that honored as well even though technically this is for a different number. And on Kohl’s part, they will honor their 15,20,30% promo they were running w/ Kohls card holders.
Very good of both organizations! Of course, this could all change in the next hour, but this is the latest news out of Kohls and was verified three time with specific reference to the “black 2 GB model”.

I bought a white Pandigital novel and am having trouble downloading from the USB device. I bought it from Fred Meyers. Should I return it and get another updated one?
