The B&N Nook might be available internationally

June 24th, 2010 by Nate Hoffelder · 2 Comments · hardware rumors

I’ve been following an interesting conversation on MobileRead for the past few days. A bunch of people tried to get a Nook Wifi shipped to their country the first day it was available. Several succeeded in this.

I don’t know about you, but I was a little surprised that B&N shipped internationally. Amazon and Walmart do not, and I can’t think of a major retailer who does.

I have a mixed bag of results here, and this is the interesting part. I have one shipping notice to Germany (I trust this source completely), several order confirmations for Dubai, Finland, Spain, Germany, plus one report that it worked for Canada (the buyer is kicking himself for not following through). Here’s the kicker: I also now have 4 reports of international orders being delayed because the Nook is out of stock.

However, the B&N website doesn’t mention a shipping delay, and the order I placed about an hour ago is supposed to ship on Monday. There are 3 possibilities here. The international orders could be delayed because:

  1. the Nook really is out of stock,
  2. B&N is going to cancel the international orders, and wants to do it quietly,
  3. the Nook is scheduled to ship internationally some time next month.

Right now I’m waiting to see if I get a delayed shipping notice or if the international buyers get a canceled order notice.

Update: My order is shipping today. I guess this means B&N lied to the international buyers.

I was able to order Nook from Greece and get a shipping confirmation. However, late last night I received this cancelation message:

    Dear Valued Customer,

We are writing to you regarding your recent order for the Barnes & Noble NOOK WiFi. Due to our current international shipping agreement, we are unable to ship this device to addresses outside of the US.

If you received a shipping confirmation email, we have refunded your original payment method. All other orders were canceled and were not billed.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience and disappointment this may have caused.

We value your patronage and hope to be given the opportunity to continue to serve you in the future.

    Sincerely,

    Barnes & Noble

I have been one of the unfortunates to have a cancelled nook order, I considered a number of options being the cheapest to buy an Android tablet and buy the nook reader app from the market for it. But then I went for a second option and bought me a basic wifi iPad. It’s same quality as the Nook reader, better processor and a lot more functions to it.
