Digital Libraries 29 July 2010

July 29th, 2010 · No Comments · links post

It’s been quite some time since  last posted on public libraries expanding their digital collections or buying e-readers. A story about a single library just wasn’t that interesting (to me, at least); and besides, Overdrive announce new libraries each month on their blog. BTW, Overdrive last posted about their new library partners on 7 July.

So here are 2 new stories; both affect library systems.

Libraries need leadership, CILIP warns government (UK)

CILIP warned the Coalition today that government actions were causing concern and uncertainty about the future of public library services

“The abolition of key library agencies calls into question the government’s commitment to public library provision,” said CILIP Chief Executive Bob McKee today, at the first meeting of the Library Support Programme Governance Board. The Board has been charged by Libraries Minister Ed Vaizey with overseeing public libraries’ response to the government’s programme of cuts in public spending.

State Librarians’ Report Suggests Ways to Advance Ebook Services

(Lexington, KY) -   Librarians needn’t worry about the availability of low-cost eReaders and other devices that will allow public library users to take advantage of downloadable eBooks from their local libraries. That is one of the  findings of an internal report released by the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA).

The COSLA eReader Task Force has spent the past six months working with consultants to learn from  knowledgeable librarians and industry experts about the direction of the eReader and eBook marketplace, and m generally, what public libraries need to do to continue to grow and improve their downloadable eBook services.
