Samsung to release 2 new Galaxy Player PMPs

March 17th, 2011 by Nate Hoffelder · 1 Comment · hardware news

Samsung  just announced a  pair of 4″ and 5″ media players. BTW, do you recall that Galaxy 5 Wifi we saw a few weeks back? I bet that’s one of the 2 announced today.

The Galaxy players come with a pair of cameras (VGA & 2.3MP), Wifi, 8GB Flash Storage, a microSD card slot, speaker, microphonel, and they’re running Android v 2.2 (2.3 coming as an upgrade). They will also ship with Flash support and VOIP support.

It looks like this is all the parts of a phone except the 3G connection.  I can live with that. No word yet on pricing or launch date, so cross your fingers for a quick launch and affordable pricing.

But there’s no mention of RAM or CPU. Do you think they went dual core or stayed with their single core Hummingbird processor? Single would probably be more than enough, but the wow factor of a dual core chip might be the deciding factor.

I’d put money on this being a single core. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing either… a single core hummingbird is more than adequate for a PMP. It’s interesting how they’re marketing it this way, since they’re basically 4″ and 5″ (wifi only) tablets.
