Jeff Bezos is delightfully vague about the Amazon Tablet

Consumer Reports interviewed the head of Amazon this week and the topic of the Amazon Tablet came up (of course). Mr. Bezos had some fun talking around the topic without actually committing himself to whether it exists.

Asked today about the possibility of Amazon launching a multipurpose tablet device, the company’s president and CEO Jeff Bezos said to “stay tuned” on the company’s plans.

“We will always be very mindful that we will want a dedicated reading device,” he said. “In terms of any other product introductions, I shouldn’t answer.”

At another event at our headquarters, Bezos responded to a question from a visiting retail reporter about a possible Amazon tablet in a way that also seemed to suggest the possible co-existence of the Kindle and other Amazon devices: “I hate the term 'killer,' as in one device killing another in the marketplace.”

I’m sure a lot of people are going to look at that and assume the tablet exists, but I’m not so sure.

Do you remember how Steve Jobs used to deny that Apple would ever do something ("people don’t read anymore")? there are a number of times that he’s had to eat his words when Apple later launched a product he denied. i think that’s what Jeff is avoiding here.

I’m not sure that Amazon are working on a tablet, but it is clear that they want to avoid painting themselves into a corner. they want to at least leave the possibility open.

Maybe he wants to collect your $1,000 offer first. LOL!

We’ll have to see if Nate welches on the offer when it’s leaked out the tablet is called simply Kindle.

I’m planning to end it. A bunch of people have told me it’s foolish and I’m almost convinced they’re right.

End it.

“I hate the term ‘killer,’ as in one device killing another in the marketplace.”

I must say, I completely agree with Bozos here.

And about that tablet, only time will tell. There have been so many rumours and almost-devices these last few years, I’m not holding my breath for any anymore.
