Amazon launched their second app store on Thursday. The Mac Download Store has 250 titles, including productivity, finance and games. What a waste of bandwidth. I’ve downloaded any number of apps, but it’s not my first choice. Mac and Windows apps are often times too fricking huge. I mean, I can understand offering downloadable Android [...]

Google have deprecated a total of 18 of their APIs this week, and there’s a good chance you might feel the bite. First, let me explain a deprecated API. An API (in this instance) is a body of code that a developer can integrate into an app. You might have used Google News search, Google [...]

I don’t want an autographed ebook
May 29th, 2011 · 13 Comments · autograph, conferences & trade shows
The ebook signing systems I saw at BEA this past week got me thinking. It’s great that they’re being developed, but after thinking about it for a few days I realized I don’t want a signed ebook. The concept of a signed book doesn’t translate well to a signed ebook. The symbolism doesn’t match up. [...]

I was sorting through my notes today and I realized that I missed something from BEA. This hasn’t been officially announced, but OverDrive added improved support for the NookColor when they updated their Android app this week. I learned about this when i spoke to an OverDrive rep BEA. There’s a reason why Autography are getting all the press
May 28th, 2011 · 5 Comments · autograph, conferences & trade shows
Autography is the most polished of the 3 ebook signing systems at BEA 2011, and it’s probably the most like to dominate the niche. Right now the Autography system consists of an iPad and the Authography ebookstore. They’re working on an Android app, and they are also looking for partner ebookstores.

Amazon Appstore updated

Amazon have updated the Appstore, one of the updates is a little surprising. Buying apps is now a 2 step process. I’d guess that a lot of people have been buying apps by mistake (I did). Of course, this update wouldn’t have helped me; I was on my laptop at the time.

IdolVine are the haute couture of ebook signing
May 27th, 2011 · 13 Comments · autograph, conferences & trade shows, hardware news
BEA is a few days gone, and I finally have time to get to writing about the booths I visited. There were 3 ebook signing systems at BEA, and IdolVine were by far the biggest and the flashiest. It was also the most lavishly funded. They’d hired a number of authors to remotely sign autographs, [...]

Wattpad release v2.0 app for iOS
May 27th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized
This is one of those things I missed because of BEA 2011. There’s a new version of the Wattpad app for your iThing. but there’s really not much changed. The total sum of the change notice in iTunes is: Add sorting options and book covers to My Library, improve chapter navigation, new toolbar and icons. [...]

Amazon, B&N, and the silver lining
May 27th, 2011 · 4 Comments · opinion
Amazon and B&N got into a scuffle in the past few days over battery life. The fight seems to have ended, with B&N the victor, so I thought I’d point out one of the side effects I expect to see. (Actually, it’s not over yet. Amazon will likely take some subtle swipe at the Nook [...]

I spend a lot of time trolling the likes of Google News, Techmeme, Digg and countless other news sites and apps. I’m always on the lookout for something new, especially if it turns out to be a reliable resource and timesaver. That’s exactly what I’ve found with the Hitpad iPad app.
