Daily Deals – Sony Reader, Nook on sale

June 22nd, 2011 by Nate Hoffelder · 7 Comments · hardware news

Well this is a first. I have come across not one but 2 ebook readers on sale today.

You can find a refurbished Sony Reader Daily Edition on sale this week for $189. This is their latest generation 7″ e-reader with a zForce touchscreen, Wifi, 3G, and a pair of card slots.

Second Update: I just got tweeted a coupon code for this refurbished e-reader. It drops the price to $130: OUTLETREADER110. Now that’s a good deal.

I don’t think this is all that great of a price when compared to the NookColor ($249), or the new Nook Touch or Kobo Touch. But it is a pretty device.

The other e-reader on sale today is a refurbished original Barnes & Noble Nook 3G. You can find it at IceMonkey for $99. This is the older Nook and it has a 6″ e-ink screen, a smaller LCD screen, Wifi, 3G, a microSD card slot, and 2GB Flash storage.

Depending on the terms of the warranty, this could be a good deal. Some of the recent Nook refurbs have been listed with a 90 day warranty instead of the usual year. That’s not long enough, IMO.

Update: a refurbished B&N NookColor can be had today on Buy.com for $209. My source told me that it was selling for $199, but that’s not the price I see. Of the 3 ebook readers today, I’d say go with the Nook Color. With a little bit if hacking you can get yourself a capable Android tablet.

Of the devices I have, most of them are tablets. And until I got my Nook 3G recently, I would have said a tablet is the best reading device also.

But I like the e-ink reading experience. I plan to pick up a Nook Touch soon, and have been recommending it as the e-reader of choice lately. The progress of the nook hackers in getting other software running has really impressed me.

But you still can’t setup shelves any way except sitting there holding the nook and selecting books 1-by-1. Until someone else lets me auto-create collections on upload from Calibre, I’ll stick with Sony.

If you look at their site, almost everything reader related is out of stock, including all of the readers except the pocket edition. Most of the covers and other accessories aren’t even listed in their catalog anymore. I am highly suspicious that Sony is about to unveil new models.

just realized that sony has updated their firmware for the 950 (awhile ago) which essentially makes it like the current android version out: web access and google books icons but on a 7″ screen with 3G (albeit the 3G only works for access to the Sony Reader store). personally, i love that 7″ screen.
