Apple Now Working on a SmartWatch? I Doubt it

It seems that rumor about Apple working on a smartwatch is making the rounds again. The NYTimes Bits blog reported yesterday that their sources told them apple was working on a new watch sized mobile device with a curved screen:

In its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company’s explorations, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Such a watch would operate on Apple’s iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company’s understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body.

I doubt it.

It’s not that I don’t find the rumor plausible so much as it doesn’t meet my standards for credibility. My rule of thumb for Apple rumors is to disbelieve all rumors unless and until leaked parts for the rumored new device show up online.

For example, there were multiple credible iPad Mini leaks before it was announced, and in fact so much info leaked that a Chinese company even released a dummy about a month before the real thing. Components for the latest iPhone leaked so many times that by the time it launched you could have built one from aftermarket parts. Even iPad 3 components leaked several times.

Until I see a shell, component, schematic, or at least a dummy unit, I simply won’t believe any rumor about a new Apple product (with the exception of the larger iPhones, because that rumor makes too much sense).

Don’t get me wrong, the popularity of the wristbands for the iPod Nano and the success of devices like the Pebble smartwatch shows that there could be a market for this. But just because there’s a market doesn’t mean Apple is working on a product.

Not that it means they’ll be releasing one, but I have no doubt Apple has been working on a phone for years.
After all, Microsoft did one. 🙂

I’ve also heard a rumor that Apple is working on some type of tablet.

An iPad Pro to try to the corporate market, yes.
With a detachable keyboard cover.
They are also looking into attaching a set of three cameras to the AppleTV so you can control games with head motions.
They’re just not sure. Whether to call it the iEyeCaptain or the I, Bobblehead.

Who knows, they might even call it the iPad.
