February 13th, 2011 · Amazon, apps & games, tips and tricks

I came across another note taking app the other day. The developer behind Quicklyst left a comment, and as you should know I love trying out new apps. This is web based, and it’s compatible with Kindle, Android, and iOS. I’ve tried it on my Kindle, and it works rather well.

Finally, a game I like on the Kindle – Flip It!

February 1st, 2011 · Amazon, apps & games

Flip It! is a simple game that just became available in the Kindle Store today. It’s a close relative of Othello, and the goal of the game is to flip all the tiles from black to white.  There’s a total of 40 levels and you can play both timed and untimed. You can also go back and repeat a level to get a better score. It costs a buck. [Read more →]

Monopoly Kindle app could use some work

December 22nd, 2010 · apps & games, software reviews

A couple days ago EA released a Kindle app version of Monopoly, the classic board game from Hasbro. I immediately got it, and now I regret spending the $2.50. I don’t think that anyone will play this game very long before they abandon it. [Read more →]

Interactive Fiction comes to the Kindle – Dusk World

December 14th, 2010 · apps & games

Do you recall when I told you about KindleQuest, a website that runs adventure games like Zork for your Kindle? Amazon just released an app that removes the need for an internet connection.

It’s called Dusk World, and after playing with it for a few minutes I’d say it’s closer to the old Choose-your-own-Adventure books than it is to Zork. The price is $5.99, and it only works on a Kindle (not the apps).

EA Sudoku now available on the Kindle

November 17th, 2010 · apps & games, kindle app

It’s that time again, folks.

Amazon just announced a new app for the Kindle: EA Sudoku. This would be great (if not for the fact that you already could play Sudoku on your Kindle). Here’s what Amazon had to say:

EA Sudoku contains thousands of built-in puzzles, as well as the ability to enter and play a puzzle from your favorite newspaper or magazine in “Newspaper” mode. With five difficulty levels from “Easy” to “Insane,” Sudoku offers plenty of fun for Sudoku players of all skill levels. Built-in game features let you make “Notes,” “Undo” moves, and apply “Error Checking.” If you get stuck, you can use the “Hints” feature for help or use “AutoFill” to display all notes on the game board. You can even track your game stats to see how you progress over time.

More text based games for your Kindle, Nook, etc

October 10th, 2010 · apps & games

A friend at MobileRead pointed me at another site that hosts text based games (thanks, Kristian).

Parchment is a privately hosted web-based Z-machine interpreter by Atul Varma. It supports what looks like a couple hundred z-code based interactive fiction titles made available by The Interactive Fiction Archive.

It doesn’t quite work on the Kindle, unfortunately. The last couple characters on each line are off the edge of the screen. And switching to article mode doesn’t seem to help any.

2 Grues fight over who gets to eat your Kindle

October 7th, 2010 · apps & games, kindle app

I bet that doesn’t actually happen in Zork, but wouldn’t it be cool if it did?

I came across a second site that’s hosting the Infocom games: PortableQuest.com. They only have the 4 Zork games (Kindle Quest had 12 games), and it appears to have the same basic set of commands as KQ.

Many people cut their teeth on the imagination fueled text adventures games released by Infocom back in the eighties. Whispernet combined with the handy keyboard and the limiting browser made the Kindle perfect for a text-based adventures. We programmed an interface specifically for the Kindle that lets you play a handful of the Zork-like adventures that we spent many of hours of our youth. Save game is supported so you can come back at a later time without restarting. Let us know what you think and how we can improve it!
