Kindle DX on Clearance at Staples for $130?

February 20th, 2012 · Daily deals

Several Reddit readers have reported that Staples is having an unannounced clearance for Amazon’s larger ereader, but I haven’t been able to confirm it. It’s supposedly selling for $130 in store, and there’s no sign of the sale on the website.

But there are multiple confirmations on Reddit, so this is definitely worth looking into.  But how d0 you do that? [Read more →]

60% Off Sale at Fictionwise

February 11th, 2012 · Daily deals

I got another “We’re Not Dead Yet” email from Fictionwise today. This B&N sub is having another sale this weekend, and it’s  good one.

You can get 60% off almost anything at Fictionwise. The only listed exclusion is one publisher (Samhain). You’ll need to enter the coupon code 021012 during checkout.

As for me, I’m not buying any. I long since cleared out my store credit there. Since I don’t expect B&N to keep Fictionwise around forever, I’ve already backed up my content elsewhere.

Philips Android Connect 3 (iPod Touch Alternative) – $90 on Woot Today

February 11th, 2012 · Daily deals

For some time now I’ve been looking at cheap Android handhelds. I’ve wanted something like the iPod Touch, running Android,  that I could use as an ebook reader.  This morning a solution to my problems came through my inbox.

Woot has the Philips Connect 3 media player on sale today for $90. Amazon is selling it for $140, so this is  very good deal today.

Daily Deal: Coby Kyros MID7015 – $99

February 6th, 2012 · Daily deals

Geeks.com has one of Coby’s 7″ Android tablets on sale today via Groupon, but it’s not as good of a deal as it first appears.

The tablet in question is the Kyros MID7015, and you can find it on Groupon for $99. Geeks.com is still selling it for $180, but that retail price is too high when you consider the fact that this year old tablet has specs not quite as good as the iDolPad, another $99 tablet.

RIM Drops the Price of the PlayBook to $199

February 2nd, 2012 · Daily deals

The most discounted tablet of 2011 is on sale again, and this time you can get it as the prize in a crackerjack box.

RIM is following up last month’s sale of $299 ( for any and all models) with  new price for the base 16GB model. You can now get it for only $199, and the deal runs until 11 February. Of course, if you really wanted one then you probably got one when it went on sale for that exact price last year. For a tablet that hasn’t been canceled it sure does go on sale  lot, doesn’t it?

Snide comments side, this is a pretty good price for the hardware. The Playbook has often been compared to the Kindle Fire, and it’s true that they look quite similar. But the Playbook has more storage, cameras, a card slot, Bluetooth, and it even has buttons. That’s an irrelevant luxury, as far as the KF is concerned.

Daily Deals – Nextbook Android Tablet, Nook Color, and More

February 1st, 2012 · Daily deals

There’s a trio of tablets on sale today and I’m not sure which one you should get.

First up is the Nextbook Next6. This is one of the better budget tablets from last year, but it was always a little underpowered and it’s running an out of date version of Android. Nextbook has always had decent hardware quality, so it’s a safe bet as alow end tablet. It would also make a decent ebook reader.  You can find it on Ebay for $99.

Daily Deal – Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ – $199

January 11th, 2012 · Daily deals

This is just a quick note to let you know that the online retailer Secondipity is offering a refurbished Galaxy Tab today for only $200. I have one, and it is an excellent tablet. This is the tablet you should get instead of the Kindle Fire and Nook tablet, that’s how good it is.

Samsung released it in 2010, but they continue to sell it and they continue to support it. The latest update adds Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It has the best specs and performance in this price range.

Kindle DX $200 on Woot – Today Only

December 31st, 2011 · Daily deals

And the after Christmas sales continue. Woot is selling the 9.7″ Kindle DX today for just over half the regular retail. This is a refurbished model, but it also comes with Amazon usual warranty and customer service so that’s not a necessarily a bad thing.

But I’m not sure it’s worth getting as your main ebook reader. Right now it’s cheap, but it’s also not very capable. While it does support PDFs, it’s not very good at it.

Daily Deals: Toshiba Thrive 10.1″, Nook Color, & More

December 27th, 2011 · Daily deals

Christmas may be past but the gadget sales continue.

The best deal today is for the Toshiba Thrive 10.1″ Android tablet. You can find it on Ebay for $330. That’s for a refurbished unit, not new, but it comes with the manufacturer’s warranty. This tablet sells for $480 on Amazon, so this is a very good deal.
