iBallz is the Ideal Case for the Tablet Sadist
January 11th, 2012 · conferences & trade shows, Geek Gear
I don’t cover cases much on this blog, but today I came across one that made me snicker and I wanted to share.
It’s the iBallz shock absorbing frame. Technically it’s not a case, but it is designed to protect your tablet or iPad from falls. The demo caught my eye because iBallz had put a Kindle Fire in a rotating drum. I got to watch it be dropped again and again. The image was mildly amusing (and effective, too).
The video is after the break, and so are some photos showing the Kindle Fire fall.

eReader Case Maker M-Edge Expands into iPhone Cases
January 11th, 2012 · conferences & trade shows, Geek Gear
The other night I got an early glimpse of a new line of cases for the iPhone. My favorite case maker is expanding once more.
In the next few months, M-Edge plans to start offering a line of had shell iPhone cases. The selection will cover both the simple solid color cases as well as colorful designs. In the long run, M-Edge also plans to offer the same custom design options as on their ereader and tablet cases.

iRobot Wins at Best Use of an iPad
January 10th, 2012 · Geek Gear
This robot caught my eye as I was wandering around Pepcom this evening. It’s a reference design that was developed by iRobot, one of the leading remote controlled robot manufacturers. It’s not for sale, but it’s cool none the less.
This one was conceived for a hospital setting, and it was developed in partnership with InTouch Health. It can perform some basic autonomous tasks, but it is mainly intended to be remotely controlled from another iPad or computer.
I don’t know when iRobot started demoing this model, but they’ve been working with InTouch Health since July of 2011.

Nate’s Gear Bag (CES 2012)
January 7th, 2012 · conferences & trade shows, Geek Gear
I’ve finalized my gear kit for CES, and I thought someone might be interested in what a true gadget nut would carry. The photo above shows everything I’m bringing, but a good portion of it will stay in the hotel room.

How to Print on Water (video)
October 21st, 2011 · Geek Gear, video
One of my Youtube followers sent me a link to this video, and after watching it I had to share it with you.
The video shows some recent work by Rusnano. I’ve mentioned this company before once or twice, mainly in connection with Plastic Logic because Rusnano are an investor in PL. other than noting the relationship, I’ve never really explained that Rusnano are a Russian tech company (obviously) that specialize in nanotechnology. The ink used in this water printing and Plastic Logic’s screen tech are 2 unrelated examples of the type of tech Rusnano are interested in developing.

E-ink’s most unusual product – a Snowglobe
September 8th, 2011 · Geek Gear
Did you catch the interview that Charbax shot at IFA-Berlin? It was a 20 minute clip with Sriram Peruvembra, the head of E-ink’s marketing department, talking about E-ink’s screen tech, products, and future plans. (Go watch it; it’s worth it.)
Sri spends the first few minutes of the video talking about how the E-ink screen tech works, and while he’s talking he also uses a small clear plastic ball to demonstrate how the technology works.

With this dress, you wouldn’t just wear your heart on your sleeve (video)
August 15th, 2011 · Geek Gear, video
Here’s an interesting project from the research division at Microsoft. It’s a concept design for a dress that demonstrates the transparency of social media. It’s called the “The Printing Dress,” and it was created by Microsoft’s Asta Roseway and Sheridan Martin Small.
This dress won Best Concept and Best in Show at the 15th annual International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC) in San Francisco back in June. It’s not epaper or any novel screen tech, unfortunately. No, on that dress the words are being shown with a fairly ordinary (but probably compact) projector. There’s also 4 circuit boards and a keyboard (built into the bodice).
