The Daily to launch in Europe by June

March 17th, 2011 · ipad app

Rupert Murdoch is a believer in failing big. That’s why he’s going to launch the Daily in as many countries as he can before it implodes.

Jonathan Miller, CDO at News Corporation, was speaking on a panel at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit when he was asked about the future of The Daily. He said that this tablet only newspaper would be launched in Western Europe by the end of June, and that the European launch was dependent on the geographical roll-out of Apple’s subscription model.

The Daily will also start charging the US subscribers next week, all 18 of them.

Did you notice that there was no mention of the Android app? Interesting.

MacMillan textbooks in Inkling (video)

February 24th, 2011 · ipad app, video

Inkling came out with an iPad app last year which was designed to support enhanced textbooks. It made a big splash, and truth be told I’ve never seen it in person.

MacMillan recently uploaded this promo video to Youtube, and it features their textbooks in the Inkling app. [Read more →]

Guinness World Records iPad app to launch on Thursday (video)

December 14th, 2010 · ipad app, video

I just heard on Twitter that the long anticipated iPad app from Guinness World Records will be available in iTunes this week for £2.99 (UK) and $4.99 (USA). Unlike the Kindle Edition I showed you a few days ago, the iPad app will be a real app. GWR (and their developer) put a lot of thought into how to best organize the vast quantity of records. Richard Branson’s iPad Magazine now available in iTunes

November 30th, 2010 · ipad app

In the middle of last week the UK entrepreneur Richard Branson announced for the first time that his media company, like NewsCorp, was working on an iPad magazine. It’s now live in iTunes. The app is free, and the first issue is $3.99.

Based on the website, Project looks like it will be a magazine something like Wired, with topics covering tech, gadgetry, and SF pop culture. There’s a demo video after the break. [Read more →]

ePagine.fr reading app now available for iOS

October 16th, 2010 · ebookstore news, ipad app, iPhone app

The French ebookstore uploaded their reading app yesterday. With this app you now have the ability to buy and download from a selection of 100k titles.

This is an app that’s just not worth the bother. It doesn’t ship with any free ebooks and I can’t find a way to load 3rd party Epubs in order to test it.  It looks like this app only supports Epub purchased from their store. You can buy from inside the app but you’re not going to want to shop; they direct you to the full website, not a mobile version.

Scruffy Kitty app shows how not to launch an app

October 11th, 2010 · ipad app, opinion

Sometimes I like to discuss how people are doing their jobs, rather than what they are doing.

A new children’s book app was launched today called Scruffy Kitty, and I almost didn’t post about it. A lot of apps are being launched lately, and the deciding factor on whether I write a post is how interesting will it look on the blog. (Do I think it’s neat? is the question I ask.)

SK had a few pictures, some text about the app, and a boring promo video (trust me, it’s not worth watching). I almost didn’t post about this app, but then I found the following animated gif on the publisher’s website:

You’ll need to click on it to see the animation.

Even though this was the most interesting artwork they had, it wasn’t with the promo materials. It was the banner for the publisher’s website.  If I hadn’t happened to visit, I’d never have seen it.

Folks, if you want to get a blogger’s attention, you need to do it right. Get my attention first, and I’ll share with my readers.

P.S.  It’s selling at £2.99 in iTunes.

Early hands on video for Hoodgrown Digital iPad app

October 11th, 2010 · ipad app

I came across a new video today from Tablezines. This is a relatively new app developer, and I believe this is their first demo.

I don’t know about you, but I’m more interested in how the app is designed than the content in it. I can’t see any earth shattering innovations, but they have pulled together a number of good organization and navigation principles. It looks like they built an app that highlights the content rather than on that tries to be clever. I’m impressed, and I think this is someone to keep an eye on. [Read more →]

InDesign magazine comes to iPad… via InDesign

October 10th, 2010 · ipad app

I found this over on one of the Adobe blogs:

This is getting kind of meta: InDesign magazine has used InDesign CS5 to publish the magazine to iPad, making it available in free preview form.  Designed by Monika Wolff and Jennifer Wills of W+W Design, the iPad version features video tutorials on CS5 features and more.  Very nicely done

It’s a shame they didn’t include at least a token article on recursion in the first iPad issue.  They missed an opportunity to stretch the joke just one step further.

Newsday made this rather clever commercial for their new iPad app. The ending is obvious, but ti’s still a little funny.
