The wildly popular iPad news and blog aggregator app, Flipboard, finally released an iPhone counterpart last week. The enthusiasm for the app resulted in several hours of downtime for Flipboard during the morning of its release, with many users unable to access the service, login or create new accounts. That didn’t stop over 1 million downloads of the app since its release on December 7.

BAM Reader now in iTunes
November 28th, 2010 · ipad pilot, iPhone app
My contact with Bluefire (makers of the Bluefire Reader) just tipped me to Books-a-Million’s new reading app for iOS, the BAM Reader.
As you can probably guess, it’s based on the Bluefire Reader. If you’re not familiar with Bluefire, it’s the app that has replaced Stanza as the touchstone reading app on iOS.
It doesn’t have quite as many formatting options, but it makes up for that by supporting Adobe DE DRM. You can buy an ebook from any ebookstore (including B&N) and read it on the Bluefire Reader.

James Patterson has a fan club app
October 29th, 2010 · iPhone app
You might recall that back in May I showed you a couple demo videos of apps from a developer called Sideways. One of the apps was a fan club app. I thought it was a great idea, and I’m a little disappointed that no one followed up on it.
Finally, someone has. Hatchette just released an iOS app for James Patterson fans. Like the one I showed you before, this is a fan club app. You can find links to his books, watch video clips of interviews, read about movies he likes,or visit his website.
Needless to say, I like the concept. But I think it should be taken a step further. Why not add a forum that you can access from inside the app? It would help build the fan base, which is the whole point.

ePagine add support for 4 more ebookstores to their iOS app
October 18th, 2010 · iPhone app, software news
Ereaders.nl are reporting that the ePagine reading app I posted about yesterday now supports buying ebooks from ebook.nl, e-boek.org, Libris and Selexyz. This means that the app now has access to virtually all the Dutch ebooks available.
I’m going to have to take his word for it. I have the app and I’m not offered the extra stores. Still, this is a good sign. This app is the first to offer access beyond just the developer’s store. Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a good reading experience. It has few features and you can’t load your own ebooks.
ePagine.fr reading app now available for iOS
October 16th, 2010 · ebookstore news, ipad app, iPhone app
The French ebookstore uploaded their reading app yesterday. With this app you now have the ability to buy and download from a selection of 100k titles.
This is an app that’s just not worth the bother. It doesn’t ship with any free ebooks and I can’t find a way to load 3rd party Epubs in order to test it. It looks like this app only supports Epub purchased from their store. You can buy from inside the app but you’re not going to want to shop; they direct you to the full website, not a mobile version.
Bluefire – new reading app for iOS
October 10th, 2010 · iPhone app
Bluefire have just announced their new app for iPhone & iPad. It boasts support for Adobe DE DRM as well as formatting options equal to Stanza. You can even download or buy ebooks from inside the app.
Normally I’d give an opinion of the app but lately I’ve been having the strangest problem with my iPod Touch. I can’t download apps. But I have been following the tweets of a couple people who have it, and they are impressed. [Read more →]

Kobo app for iOS updated
October 8th, 2010 · iPhone app, software news
A new version of Kobo iOS app just showed up in iTunes this morning. The new version has one major new feature add: notes and highlights. It’s not quite ready for download, though. They’ve updated the page in iTunes, but I can’t download it. I’ll try back later.
It’s a pity they couldn’t have gotten these features into the Literati; that would have done a lot to salvage the review.

An email came into my inbox this morning, and I have to admit I was a little surprised. VitalSource are one of the 2 big textbook platforms (along with CafeScribe). I would have thought that they already had an iOS app. CafeScribe released their app last September.
With this new app you will be able to use digital textbooks purchased from VitalSource on Windows, Mac OSX, iOS, as well as most web browsers.
