Coliloquy’s “Active Content” Ebooks Don’t Actually Let You Do Much

February 4th, 2012 · apps, Coliloquy, kindle app, software reviews

A couple weeks ago a new digital publisher burst onto the scene.

Coliloquy was getting all sorts of buzz for their apps for the Kindle.  Like many developers before them, Coliloquy had adapted the idea of the old “Choose Your Own Adventure” books to  digital form. And like a number of other developers, Coliloquy set out to release their books as apps that you can run on the Kindle.

I was given a review sample earlier this week, and a few days before that I bought one of the apps on my own. I’ve spent several hours reading the ebooks as well as paging through and seeing where the decisions took me. Aside from the fact that the stories didn’t interest me,  there were a couple things I didn’t like about these ebook apps.

Coliloquy Launches Ebook Apps for the Kindle

January 17th, 2012 · kindle app, software news

I predicted on Sunday that this coming year would see more innovations in apps than in ereaders, and it looks like one developer has decided to confound the issue. Coliloquy launched their first 4 ebook apps today, and they’re exclusively available on the Kindle.

Coliloquy is joining a growing number of ebook app developers who are adapting existing stories and creating interactive reading experiences. These apps are the latest incarnation of an old genre of books.

Kindle Cloud Reader Now Works on Firefox

November 8th, 2011 · Amazon, kindle app

Amazon just announced that their new HTML5 based reading app, Kindle Cloud Reader, now supports Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Amazon launched this app a little over 3 months ago, and at the time it only worked on the iPad. It was pretty clear back then that Amazon developed this app in response to Apple (and their unreasonable demands on in-app purchases). Amazon launched the Kindle Cloud Reader with support for Safari, Chrome, and today they added support for Firefox.

Grid Detective – New Free Kindle App

September 22nd, 2011 · free ebooks, kindle app

Amazon have just posted another free app for the Kindle. It’s called Grid Detective, and it’s a logic puzzle type of a game.

You start each level with a set of clues. Your goal is to deduce the solution based on the apparently unrelated clues. There are 10 Easy, 10 Moderate, and 10 Hard puzzles in the app, and the easy ones look difficult to me.

On a related note, I’ve also added this app to the page which lists free Kindle apps.

New Free Kindle Game from Amazon – Pirate Stash

September 19th, 2011 · kindle app

I’ve just come across a new free game that you can play on the Amazon Kindle. Amazon released it today because it has a pirate theme and what better way to celebrate International Talk like a Pirate Day?

Pirate Stash is based on a timeless puzzle game that never gets old. Your goal is to push a treasure chest around the screen until it is on top of the X. Yes, it’s simple,  but that is why it never gets old. Later levels have several treasure chests and X, and the complexity increases as you progress.

I would go get it now while it is still free. Like the other Kindle games Pirate Stash can only be played on the K2, K3 and the KindleDX.

New Kindle Tips & Tricks Ebook released – Get it Now

September 9th, 2011 · kindle app

7 Dragons, the folks behind the Kindle Reviews blog, have just released their first Kindle ebook app. They’ve gathered together more than 100 tips they’ve picked up in the past 3+ years of blogging and bundled them into an ebook. You can find it now in the Kindle Store:

7 Dragons’ Tips for Kindle

It only costs a buck and I definitely think it’s worth the money.

Unfortunately, it’s an app, not an ebook, so it only works on the K2, K3, and KDX. But I’ve looked over the listing and I can understand why they released it as an app. The screen shots show a pleasant design and the ability to add your own tips to the collection.

I want you to take a moment and think about what they just did here.  They released an ebook app that runs on an ebook reader. How meta is that?

New free app for the Kindle – Jigsaw Words

August 23rd, 2011 · free ebooks, kindle app

Amazon have just released another free app for the Kindle.

Jigsaw Words is a cross between a jumble, hangman, and a crossword puzzle. You’re given a set of clues and a set of word fragments. Your goal is to assemble the fragments and solve each clue.

It’s fun, and I’m really glad that the game let me type in the words rather than have to select the fragments. I still don’t like the d-pad.

This is one of about 12 free apps that Amazon released over the last year or so. Like the others, Jigsaw Words will only work on the K2, K3, and Kindle DX.

Accuweather – new free Kindle app

July 12th, 2011 · kindle app

Normally I’d put this with the daily deals, but this app is such a surprise that I thought it deserved its own post.

Update: It appears that Amazon pulled the app. Sorry.

Accuweather, an online weather service, have just released an app for the Kindle. According to Amazon the app was released back at the beginning of June, but I only noticed it today (when someone posted a link on MobileRead).

The app is free, and it works much the same as any weather website. Give it your location and it will pull local weather data. and show it to you. It covers current weather, as well as hourly/daily/weekly forecasts.

The app seems to work rather well, but I’m at a loss to explain why you’d want this on your Kindle.I’m not sure that you will ever be without another source of weather info. Perhaps, Accuweather tracked a lot of people visiting from the Kindle?

In any case, it is fun to play with could be useful one day. I’d get it now.

Daily Deal: 12 customer favorite Kindle apps on Sale $.99, new free Kindle app

July 6th, 2011 · Daily deals, kindle app

Amazon are having a sale right on 12 Kindle apps. They’ve all been marked down to $.99 each, and you can find them here. There are 2 NYTimes crosswords, Sudoku, a couple card games (Solitaire & Poker), Hangman, Word Soup, and 5 board games (Monopoly, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Backgammon, Mahjong).

I’ve tried the Monopoly game, and I don’t think it’s worth buying. But the rest should be worth the risk. The sale ends on 11 July.

And of course, there’s also a bunch of free apps for the Kindle as well as a new free app that was released this morning: Pixel Perfect Puzzles.

Check out these free games for the Kindle

June 14th, 2011 · Freebies, kindle app

Some time back I decided that it would be a good idea to keep track of all the free apps for the Kindle.

I’ve been updating this page as Amazon released each new free app, and I’ve found 9 13 17so far. Note: The following apps current work only on the K2, K3, and Kindle DX.

Update: I’m now up to 17 games, all free. BTW, not all games will work on the Kindle Touch/K5. But I would get them anyway, simply because they are free.
