ALA respond to HarperCollins library ebook restrictions

March 15th, 2011 · press release

This press release says about what you’d expect. We Disapprove. But it doesn’t really have any kick to it, which is why it kept getting bumped to the bottom of my to-do list.

Have you read Cory Doctorow’s editorial in The Guardian? Now _that_ was worth a read. The logic, the passion, the insightful arguments – the ALA should have had him write this.

Veztek USA have an impossible ebook app

March 7th, 2011 · opinion, press release

An interesting press release came across my desk this morning, and I still trying to figure out what the company is smoking. (Pot’s legal in California, right?)

The End is Near: for Kindle and Nook

Veztek USA put out a press release this morning claiming that they would soon release “the first universal eBook reader app for iPhone and iPad platforms” which will be in iTunes in mid summer.

The only question I have is: How do they plan to deal with DRM? [Read more →]

HarperCollins respond to pissed off librarians

March 2nd, 2011 · digital library, press release

HC posted this open letter yesterday. it was signed by Josh Marwell, the Presidnet of Sales at HC.

I’m going to post this as is. I’ve already read it, and while I could deconstruct the lies, half-truths, and marketing BS, I would be so angry at the end that I do not think it would be a constructive activity.

But I will leave you with this unsettling thought. How long do you think it will be before some one pulls this shit with retail ebooks? I’d say 6 months to a year.

Apple try to justify the in-app price gouging

February 15th, 2011 · opinion, press release

Apple issued a press release today about the in-app subscription. There’s nothing truly new here, but this press release does give us a look inside the greedy mind of Steve Jobs. Here’s what Apple said about the in-app option:

“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. [Read more →]

Sports Illustrated to launch cross platform digital subscription plan

February 11th, 2011 · press release

Time Inc just announced a new subscription plan for Sports Illustrated. $48 a year will get you full access to the iconic sports magazine on the web, Android, and WebOS. (Did you notice that iOS is missing?) The new platform will offer the “iconic print magazine” on all devices, starting with Android tablets and smartphones as well as a web-based version on si.com.

Actually, the deal gets better: $48 covers the print subscription, too. Compared to the current price in iTunes ($5 an issue), that’s a pretty good deal. Current Sports Illustrated subscribers will also get digital access added to their existing subscription.

Borders to be dropped from the NY Stock Exchange

February 4th, 2011 · ebookstore news, press release

It’s not going to happen just yet, though.

Borders got word today that they will be dropped from the NYSE soon. It seems that there is a rule that penny stocks can’t be traded on the NYSE, and Borders’ stock price has been under a buck since the beginning of January. They have 6 months to get the price up before the stock is removed, but given that I think they’ll be broken up and sold off by then I really don’t think it matters.
