New reading app, e-reader launched by Hrvatski Telekom

July 19th, 2011 · hardware news, Sipix

Hrvatski Telekom, a T-Mobile subsidiary, launched their ebook reader today.

The Planet9 e-reader has a 6″ Sipix screen, 2GB Flash, microSD card slot, Wifi, and a built in MP3 player. The Planet9 is also supposed to have a 3G connection, but it’s not clear who pays for the data plan.

This is an e-reader that should be familiar to you. It’s shown up before as the Thalia Oyo, Fnacbook, and it was originally released as the Binder from Sagem  Wireless. But unlike the other models, this one has been customized for the Croatian market, and it has an English-Croatian  dictionary included. According to the announcement, it’s available in most T-Mobile locations (Europe/Croatia/?), and the retail is a whopping 1698 kuna (~$323 USD).

Hrvatski Telekom also have an app, and it went up in the Android Market a couple weeks ago.  You can buy ebooks inside the app, and it appears to support Adobe DE DRM. It’s not clear how diverse the selection is, but I did notice one odd detail. The app description is in Croatian (so says Google Translate). I guess they’re planning on focusing on the niche market.

Ebook reader designer Sagem Wireless went bankrupt last month

June 16th, 2011 · hardware news, Sipix

But they managed to keep it very quiet. BTW, Sagem Wireless changed their name to Mobiwire back in February, so I’ll refer to them as such.

I don’t have full details on the story just yet, but I do have a back channel confirmation that Mobiwire did indeed file for bankruptcy at the beginning of May. (I have to admit that I missed the story at the time, but then so did most people.)

New Pandigital Novel Clears the FCC

May 5th, 2011 · fcc, hardware news, Sipix

Pandigital secretly hates me. That’s why they keep releasing new e-readers all under the same model name.

This unit is based on a 6″ Sipix (I think) screen, and it has Wifi, 2GB Flash storage, and a microSD card slot. It’s tied to the B&N eBookstore and you can buy ebooks from the device.

It’s not clear which screen it’s using, but the paperwork does mention that this e-reader was designed by Qisda. I also found a mention in the manual of a touchscreen. Put the 2 together and the screen is probably a Sipix screen, not E-ink. So far as I know Qisda have only developed e-readers with a Sipix screen.

There’s no word on when it will be released.

The 2 Asus e-readers (video)

March 15th, 2011 · hardware reviews, Sipix, video

Notebook Italia got their hands on both of the new Asus e-readers when they were at CeBIT a couple weeks ago. This is the first video I’ve seen that compared the 2, and the differences are fascinating. I especially like this photo they took shoiwng the edges of the 2 gadgets. It really brings the difference in to focus.

The video is after the break.

Hanlin V60 shows up in Russia

March 2nd, 2011 · hardware news, Sipix

The Ukrainian e-reader distributor Lbook have just unveiled their latest e-reader, the V60.  This is a Kindle clone with a 6″ E-ink screen, Wifi, 2GB Flash storage, SD card slot, optional 3G, and a headphone jack. Format support includes FB2, EPUB, PDF, DOC, DJVU, RTF, TXT, HTML, PPT.

A similar e-reader is already on the market in India, where it is called the Wink. Also, I reviewed a close relative if this e-reader, the Hanlin A60. The big difference between the A60 and the V60 is that the first has a Sipix screen with a capacitive touch screen.

I thought the hardware was nice and usable.

My source has a pretty extensive set of photos of the V60. It looks like Lbook didn’t use the stock firmware but instead wrote their own. This is great; I can see that they made a number of interesting changes.

It should be out next quarter. Retail has not been set.

GMini to release 3 new epaper e-readers in Russia

February 18th, 2011 · hardware news, Sipix

click to embiggen

I’ve just come across another company in Russia with plans to release their own e-reader.  I’d say at this point Russia is possible the second most active e-reader market (after the US).

Gmini announced 3 new e-readers this week. One will have a Sipix screen, and the other 2 will have E-ink screens.

First up is the Gmini MagicBook M6P. This e-reader has a 6″ Pearl E-ink screen, microSD card slot, FM radio, and MP3 player. Most details are still vague, but it is supposed to support “all popular formats, including FB2, EPUB, PDF.”

It should be on the market in the next few weeks. [Read more →]
