Inkling to Launch a New iBooks Author Competitor Next Week?

February 6th, 2012 · Inkling, iPad, software rumors

O’Reilly will be holding their annual digital publishing conference next week, and I will be there, helping with the ereader petting zoo. But do you know who else will be there? Ryan Knapp, one of the founders of Inkling.

As you probably know, Inkling was one of the hot iPad startups of 2010. They were developing an enhanced textbook platform on the iPad, and they’ve been selling textbooks via their own app. But besides launching and periodically going back for more capital, Inkling hasn’t done much that is newsworthy of late. But soon that will change.

Nintendo WiiU to get App Store (Reading App?)

January 2nd, 2012 · Nintendo, software rumors

There’s a couple interesting stories going around today about Nintendo’s next game console. According to The Daily, Nintendo is planning to launch a full bore app store for the WiiU.

Their sources are reporting that Nintendo plans to sell apps for both the entire gaming platform as well as apps that can be played on the controller itself. There aren’t any specifics yet on what apps will be available, but the controller has a 6″ touchscreen as well as a bunch of buttons.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it got a web browser, email app, and other basic tablet features.

Intel now working on an Ebook App Creation Tool

September 7th, 2011 · software rumors

Details are still sketchy, and I am not sure how it works. But I have confirmed that developers at Intel are indeed working on a new tool that will help you make an ebook app.

Last week I happened across a new page on Intel’s developer support site.  They had accidentally put it online, and it showed up in a Google Search Alert. The page doesn’t really say anything beyond the fact that there was an app creator (and the name of one of the Intel engineers working on it), but it’s still there if you want to see it.

I searched and could not find more info, and then I registered and searched again. Still nothing. Eventually i got in contact with the named engineer and he confirmed a few details.

Throwing more wood on the Kindle Epub fire

May 20th, 2011 · hardware rumors, software rumors

I’ve been asking around about the Kindle Epub rumor and I’ve received a couple interesting responses. I swear that this post isn’t SEO bait or gossip; I really do have some info to share.

One of my sources reported hearing mutterings from publishers. They’ve been talking about Amazon and Epub for a little while now, but it wasn’t clear if this was an actual leak or perhaps confusion on the technical details.

But that’s not the interesting one. My other source is a blogger and she contacted publishers that she’s worked with before. She hasn’t gotten a response, and the silence speaks volumes.

If the publishers hadn’t known anything abut the Kindle Epub story then they would have been able to converse freely. I don’t know what they would say, but they would have said something. The only reason i can see for them to remain silent is that they are under some kind of NDA for this topic.

I still don’t know what’s going on, but I’m beginning to believe that there is _something _ happening here. The responses are just too odd for this to be a coincidence.

B&N working on a Nook for Meego app?

September 14th, 2010 · software rumors

This is probably going to slip most people’s notice today, but I caught it.

B&N were listed in the press release as one of the supporters of Intel’s new app store, AppUp. This could mean that there is a Nook for Meego app coming some time in the not too distant future. I’m still waiting to hear back from B&N about when the app will be available.

From the press release:

Emphasizing a seamless experience across operating systems, James introduced general availability of the Intel® AppUpSM center netbook app store for consumers. The Intel AppUp center includes both free and paid apps for entertainment, social networking, gaming and productivity, optimized for a netbook’s mobility and screen size. To encourage consumers to try new applications, Intel AppUp provides “try before you buy” solutions, encouraging consumers to purchase apps they otherwise might not have. The launch was also marked by the availability of Adobe* AIR applications, as well as apps from companies including Accuweather*, Barnes & Noble*, Funkitron*, Gibson Guitars*, iWin*, Kaplan*, KONAMI*, and Lifetime*.

Is Palm up for Sale?

April 12th, 2010 · hardware rumors, software rumors

Bloomberg sure thinks so:

Palm Inc., creator of the Pre smartphone, put itself up for sale and is seeking bids for the company as early as this week, according to three people familiar with the situation. The company is working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners to find a buyer, said the people, who declined to be identified because the sale isn’t public. Taiwan’s HTC Corp. and China’s Lenovo Group Ltd. have looked at the company and may be potential bidders, said the people. Dell Inc. also looked at Palm, though it decided against an offer, according to two of the people.

Palm shares surged 32 percent last week on renewed speculation that the Sunnyvale, California-based company would get a takeover bid. Before the rally, the stock had plunged more than 60 percent this year, dragged down by disappointing sales of the Pre and Pixi phones. Chief Executive Officer Jon Rubinstein, who developed Palm’s latest operating system, was counting on the devices to attract customers and restore its status as an industry pioneer.

Baidu to Enter E-reader Market?

March 22nd, 2010 · hardware rumors, software rumors

From Investor’s Business Daily:

Chinese-language Internet search giant Baidu Inc. (BIDU) is said to be weighing a plan to enter the e-book market.Sources fluctuated recently that based on the mode of its video portal qiyi.com, the Nasdaq-traded company intended to establish an independent e-book company. In addition to introducing venture capital, it wants to list it on the stock market in the future. Ren Xuyang, vice president responsible for market and business exploration at Baidu.com, is reportedly to be busy seeking CEO for the e-book company now.

I don’t have a good feeling about this rumor. It just doesn’t  strike me as plausible.

B&N eReader app coming to Windows Mobile on 24 March?

March 22nd, 2010 · software rumors

B&N has been awful quiet lately about when they are going to release new versions of their eReader app.  Ever since the Nook was announced, we’ve been waiting for B&N to update the eReader app for Blackberry, Android, etc, so we could get the latest features (Epub support, for example).

So why 24 March? Because that is when T-Mobile will start selling the HTC HD2 in the US. The HD2 phone ships with the newest version of the B&N eReader app. In fact, you can find already hacked copies of the new firmware online. If you look hard enough, you can even find an unauthorized version of the app that some industrious hacker pulled from the firmware.

This is probably wishful thinking, but B&N might also release the updated app for other OSes.
