I recently finished reading the ebook “Victorian Internet” by Tom Standage which I bought from Barnes & Noble on my Nook Simple. The content of the ebook was enjoyable and all that I expected, but the digital scanning had many mistakes that were not corrected before this ebook was sold. Words were spelled in correctly, letters appeared where numbers should be, and the initial letter of many chapters was rendered wrong. It was apparent that no one had proofread this book after it was scanned and the errors continued throughout the book to the end. Has this particular topic every been brought up in the discussion of ebooks? If so, can you direct me to any site where I can find information and/or comments on the quality of scanning or the proofreading of ebooks. Thanks very much. –Bob G.

    Nate–

I like your site and read it regularly. When I ran across this crowdfunding project:

–I thought it might be of interest to you and your readers. The “Earl” project will create an E-Ink display Android tablet that is a cross between an Amazon Kindle reader and a Star Trek tricorder.

The specs are incredible. Battery life is 20 hours and the back of the tablet–a solar cell array–can completely recharge it in 5 hours. The screen is flexible E-Ink with an optional night light mode, plus an infrared sensor to make it touchable while wearing gloves. The tablet contains a GPS, a gyroscope, a two-way radio, an am/fw/sw radio that can also receive NOAA weather channels, it can measure compass direction, wind speed, temperature, barometric pressure and humidity. It is water/dust/shock/mud proof, will work from 0-50 deg C, and up to 40,000 feet elevation. Oh, and it will also display real topo maps behind your current position and update them as you move about.

I particularly like that it will support EPub, Mobi, and PDF ebook formats. It will probably run the Android Kindle software as well. $250, or $300 if you want super hi-res topo maps included.

I spend a lot of time on scout trips with my sons, and I’d love to not have to carry both a Kindle (for the long battery life) and an iPad (for the applications and connectivity). I’d also like a portable device that I don’t need to baby, and that can recharge itself. I couldn’t get out my credit card fast enough.
