Over the past couple days I’ve been playing with Laker, a new ebook framework. This is a collection of of bits and peices of HTML5 that gives you a number of shortcuts in designing your own ebook app. It’s based on a number of other projects, including Baker ebook Framework the Less CSS Framework, and [...]

The Wired iPad app could use some work
April 18th, 2011 · 2 Comments · software reviews
So Wired are giving away the May issue of their iPad edition for free, and I finally have an iPad. I immediately downloaded it – well, “immediately” is a bit of a stretch; it was 380MB and took 20 minutes to download. I’ve had a number of requests on twitter that I review this app, [...]
Sometimes it’s not you – It’s the app
April 18th, 2011 · 1 Comment · software reviews
I’ve been getting the free Android app from Amazon ever since the Appstore opened, and that’s how I got the app I’m reviewing today. PewPew is the first app I’ve ever had that made use of a multi-touch screen (like the one on my gTablet). Unfortunately, it’s really not all that well designed. I’m writing [...]
In search of an Android Firewall app
April 12th, 2011 · 7 Comments · Android
My experiences with the Amazon Appstore have brought home the fact that Android leaks like a sieve. We have no idea which app is doing what. It’s high time that I added a firewall to my Android tablets. But it’s easier said than done. I’ve found a bunch of firewall apps, but there’s a problem. [...]
The Inspiron Duo ships with a Blio powered reading app
March 26th, 2011 · No Comments · hardware news, hardware reviews
I’m working my way through installing reading apps on my Duo and I discovered that Dell’s strange little netbook convertible shipped with a reading app. It’s called Bookstage, and it’s powered by Blio. This isn’t much of a news item, but I haven’t seen it mentioned on other blogs. Engadget didn’t talk about it in [...]
And people wondered why Amazon launched an app store
March 24th, 2011 · 5 Comments · app store news
The Amazon Appstore launched a couple days ago, and I just finally got all the bugs worked out so I could download apps. Apparently Amazon’s system thought I was outside the US. (I live in the South, so I’m pretty sure that was just wishful thinking.) I just downloaded the free app of the day, [...]

Kindle gets a Notepad app
March 17th, 2011 · 6 Comments · kindle app
It’s a pretty good one, too. Have you ever used one of the Notepad ebooks on the Kindle? If not, you can make one by creating an empty ebook and then adding typed notes. They never really worked well for me, which is why I’m glad to finally get a real notepad app. Late last [...]
Kindle iOS app updated
March 15th, 2011 · No Comments · software news
A new update for the Kindle app showed up in iTunes today. The only change is a minor bug fix from the previous version. But it is interesting that Apple continue to allow the app to be updated. it looks like we really may see this come to a showdown in June. iTunes
Apple will cripple the Kindle web app
March 15th, 2011 · 3 Comments · opinion
If you’ve been following the Apple in-app purchase fracas of late, then you might know that a log of people are hoping that web apps will be able to get around the need to pay Apple’s vig. If not, then let me explain. The way a web app works is that it uses HTLM5 to [...]
Kobo Android app updated, still only available in the Android Market
March 11th, 2011 · 2 Comments · software news
Kobo have announced a new version of their Android reading app. It sounds like they’ve added quite a few interesting features: Sharing Passages & Notes to Facebook Brightness and Rotation Lock Controls Share a Book Recommendation to Facebook Now if only they would let me download it from some place other than the Android Market. [...]
