A few days ago Pioneer Computers (not the electronics giant) posted the first details on their new Android tablet. The DreamBook ePad H10 HD is based on a 10 (1280×800) capacitive touchscreen, and it’s running v3.0 Honeycomb on a Tegra 2 CPU. It has 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth, 2 cameras (2mp and 5MP), speakers, microphone, and [...]

How Hachette Uses an Agency Agreement to Sidestep Anti-Competitive Pricing Laws in Australia
March 9th, 2011 · No Comments · ebookstore news
Sigh. I suppose it was naive of me to think that customers (little guy) could force a large company (big bully) to act fairly – in this case regarding their policy of anti-competitive ebook pricing. Yesterday I wrote that they were breaking the ACCC law that governs “Resale Price Maintenance”. I said I’d tell the ACCC [...]

The Agency Model. Not a bad idea, only illegal (in Australia)
March 4th, 2011 · 6 Comments · opinion
by Darryl Adams With Random House entering the Agency Price Model with the rest of the 5 big publishers (Hatchet, Harper Collins, Random House, McMillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster), there has been a lot of discussion about the practice. Firstly, to be clear, Agency Pricing is illegal in Australia. As a form of Price [...]

Borders (Australia) go into administration
February 17th, 2011 · 3 Comments · ebookstore news, redgroup
In what I’m sure must surely be a coincidence, the owner of Borders in Australia (and part owner of Kobo Books) has filed paperwork asking for the court to appoint an administrator. RedGroup Retail, the owner of Borders (AU), Whitcoulls, and Angus & Robertson, made this request after a board meeting today.
The Daily now available in Australia
February 6th, 2011 · No Comments · opinion, software news
Jason Davis of Bookbee just came across The Daily in the Australian branch of iTunes. The contents the same, but the prices are about 20% higher. I’ve been looking at The Daily these past few days, and I still don’t understand how it’s supposed to make money. Quite some time before it launched I pointed [...]
Bebook Club up for preorder in Australia
October 19th, 2010 · 1 Comment · hardware news
Word just came through Twitter that the Australia affiliate of Bebook are now taking pre-orders for the Bebook Club, a 6″ e-reader. It’s selling for $269 AUD and it ships with a USB cable and the manual (but no case, ouch). The Club is a close relative of the Bebook Neo, only without the Wifi [...]
Guess who is using the Kobo store in Australia & NZ?

Sony, that’s who. Let me assure my antipodal readers that I know I’m a week behind on this story. I missed it the first time around because I was distracted by the device announcement. But I think this story is important enough that it’s still worth a post. This was probably missed by a lot [...]
Laser bring new 5″ e-reader to Australia
August 16th, 2010 · No Comments · gajah, hardware news
The Laser EB-101 is based on a 5″ LCD screen, and it has 2GB Flash and a microSDHC card slot. It’s available now for $149.95 AUD. Details are sparse, so I don’t know much. But I think I recognize the menu shown on the screen. It looks a lot like other Gajah e-readers I’ve shown [...]
New 7″ LCD e-reader for Australia
July 26th, 2010 · No Comments · hardware news
The GHT G2ER e-reader has a 7″ LCD screen, 2GB Flash, as well as pretty broad video, audio, and ebook support. But it doesn’t have a touchscreen, Wifi, or support for ebook DRM. The battery life is also disappointing. If you ask me, this is another converted digital picture frame. I also think it’s the [...]
