Borders Aren’t Just Cutting Back on Stores

March 28th, 2011 · 4 Comments · borders, hardware news

They’ve also reduced the number of e-readers they sell. Borders launched their Area-e, the store department where they promote eBooks and e-readers, last year with the stated goal of having the broadest selection of e-readers anywhere in the US. There was talk of having 10 or more models on display for customers to try. Sidenote: [...]

Borders Bankruptcy leaves Calif. town holding the lease

March 20th, 2011 · 1 Comment · opinion

Pico Rivera, California, is a symbol of much of what went with Borders. It’s a suburb of LA, and it has a population of around 65 thousand. Eight years ago this small town convinced Borders to open a store in its shopping center by making a simple promise. The town would pay about a third [...]

Borders Store Closings March Madness Bracket (PDF)

March 18th, 2011 · No Comments · humor

Evil Wylie created this bracket over on EvilReads. It pokes fun at how Borders are closing stores by comparing it to the elimination rounds of NCAA basketball. All the stores on this bracket come from the first list of 200 stores scheduled for closure. If you want, you could track the stores as they close. [...]

Borders closing 28 more stores (map)

March 17th, 2011 · No Comments · borders

I’ve just come across another list of store closures which Borders released just yesterday. Once again, I have made a map, and it’s embedded after the break. The stores on this map will be closing in late May. It looks like 4 clusters, doesn’t it? I don’t think the ones in the midwest are close [...]

And the downward  slide continues… There was a conference call this afternoon that was led by Borders Group President Mike Edwards. One of the details he mentioned was that up to 75 more stores are on the chopping block next week. The additional closures come from a group of 140 stores that “have been identified [...]

Borders closing sales are ahead of schedule

March 8th, 2011 · 4 Comments · Uncategorized

Borders appear to be dying faster than expected. Mike Cane first noticed this on Saturday, and yesterday I read this about the closing sales: The liquidators have reported that store closing sales are outpacing their expectations, with many of these stores moving to 40% off within the last few days. These locations have been incredibly [...]

An Interesting footnote on the death of Borders

February 27th, 2011 · 7 Comments · borders

Did you know that Borders’ former VP of E-Business used to run Tower Records? Mike Cane left a comment yesterday on my post about how Borders screwed up e-readers. He wondered what happened to Kevin Ertell, who at the time was  VP of E-Business at Borders. About 3 years ago Kevin had left a comment [...]

E-readers – one of Borders’ many misteps

February 26th, 2011 · 7 Comments · borders, hardware news

I finally had a chance to go to the nearest closing Borders today. It’s down in Stafford VA, which is too far for me to drive most of the time. I expected to see the usual chaos of a closing store: long lines, books dumped wherever, shelved books in disarray. But what I didn’t expect [...]

An Inside view of Borders

February 18th, 2011 · 1 Comment · ebookstore news

I know I’m posting a lot about Borders today, and I’ll try not to over do it. But this one is interesting. A blog over on LiveJournal just came across my inbox today. It’s written by a couple of people who work at Borders, and at least one will be laid off when the store [...]

You’re not going to believe the crap Borders are trying to pull with gift cards

February 18th, 2011 · 3 Comments · ebookstore news, redgroup

The parent company of the  Australian Borders chain (no relation to the US chain) went into administration (the Australian equivalent of bankruptcy) yesterday. Redgroup Retail then decided to go for double or nothing by pissing off the few customers they have left. They’ve changed their policy on gift cards, and the change is probably illegal. [...]
