No, the iPad2 didn’t show up at CES 2011

January 12th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

A couple of videos are going around today that purport to show an iPad 2 dummy. Supposedly a case manufacturer was given a dummy in order to work on a case and they “accidentally” brought it to CES. Yeah, right.

CES: E-Fun to release 2 new Android tablets

January 10th, 2011 · No Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news

You might recall that about a month ago I reviewed the Next2, an Android tablet/e-reader from E-Fun. Their product reps were in Vegas because of CES (they weren’t an exhibitor), and I managed to catch a few minutes with E-Fun reps right before they left. That’s the good news. The bad news is that my [...]

CES: Gajah – e-readers, tablets, & e-readers oh my!

January 10th, 2011 · 1 Comment · conferences & trade shows, hardware news, video

Thanks to the Kindle-Nook price war this year (and the recession), you’d expect the smaller e-reader companies to cut back on their expenses. That’s why the e-reader selection was paltry this year (though I’d say it was the price war and not the recession, myself). But not Gajah. They’re doing so well that they actually [...]

CES: Hanlin

January 10th, 2011 · No Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news

Hanlin was at CES again this year, and this time they brought their mainstay V3 (6″ E-ink) and V5 (5″ E-ink), 2 Kindle clones I remeber from last year V60 (6″ E-ink) and V90 (9.7″ E-ink) as well as 4 new e-readers. The recently announced A6 and A9 e-readers with Sipix screens did make an [...]

I scored the best swag at CES 2010

January 10th, 2011 · 2 Comments · conferences & trade shows

This is a little crass, but I had to show off the stuff I brought home from CES. One of the reasons to go to CES is the swag. (Come on, who doesn’t like free stuff?) There was a lot of it this year, too. Lots of booths had free thumb drives with press kits, [...]

CES: RockChip

January 9th, 2011 · 2 Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news, video

This was a surprise and a joy. RockChip had more tablets, e-readers, PMPs, an other gadgets than both Marvell and Freescale combined. I mention those 2 companies by name because they’re Rockchip’s direct competition. Like Marvell, RockChip makes CPUs and can help design the entire gadget.

CES: Aluratek

January 8th, 2011 · 1 Comment · hardware news

This is a post that you probably think isn’t worth reading. I bet you already read about the e-reader that Aluratek announced. Well, that press release was incomplete. Aluratek have a tablet and 2 new e-readers (one was released a few weeks ago). First, Aluratek are going to be a hardware partner for Marvell. They [...]

CES: Hanvon

January 8th, 2011 · No Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news

Editor’s Note: I thought that I published this post in January 2011, but it was listed as a draft when I found it today. It is overĀ  year old but I am posting it anyway. Hanvon had a bunch of e-readers at CES, but the 2 that you’re dying to see are the new 9.7″ [...]

Onyx 9.7″ e-reader made an appearance at CES

January 8th, 2011 · 4 Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news

Lost amid the hubbub of tablets was this new e-reader from a little tech company from China. I’ve been waiting to see the larger Onyx e-reader for well over a year now, and CES was its first public appearance. In most ways this is a larger clone of the Boox 60. It has an E-ink [...]

CES: Ectaco Jetbook K-12

January 8th, 2011 · 7 Comments · conferences & trade shows, hardware news

When it comes to e-reader industry, Ectaco are something of an outsider. They have a lot of experience with electronic dictionaries and digital translation, but it was only recently that they started integrating their core expertise into their e-reader development.
