E-reader sales are down in China

April 28th, 2011 · No Comments · hardware news

Do you recall how the iPad was supposed to kill off e-readers? It looks like that might be happening in China. E-reader sales are down 7% in Q1 2011 against last year, and the total sold is estimated to be around 282 thousand. What’s curious about this is that my source blames the iPad. Apple [...]

In the Era of eBooks, What Is a Book Worth? (II)

April 27th, 2011 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

The first article in this series of musings, In the Era of eBooks, What Is a Book Worth? (I), brought a lot of comment, particularly on blogs that reprinted it. Most commenters disagreed with me, and several of the commenters compared an author’s uniqueness and a book’s worth to a painting.

April 13th, 2011 · 6 Comments · opinion

I’m one frustrated ebooker! I recently purchased several books in hardcover (The Eichmann Trial by Deborah E. Lipstadt and Bismarck: A Life by Jonathan Steinberg), which is (supposedly) what the publishers prefer I do. But although I bought hardcover versions for my library, I would like to do the actual reading on my Sony Reader.

My experiences with the Amazon Appstore have brought home the fact that Android leaks like a sieve. We have no idea which app is doing what. It’s high time that I added a firewall to my Android tablets. But it’s easier said than done. I’ve found a bunch of firewall apps, but there’s a problem. [...]
