New LCD e-reader pops up in Germany

March 18th, 2011 · 4 Comments · hardware news

Mike Cane tipped me to this e-reader when he somehow managed to find it on Amazon.de. It’s from a consumer electronics company I’ve never heard of before, and so far as I can tell this is their first e-reader. The SVP EB701 is based on a 7″ LCD screen. I’m not sure of the resolution, [...]

The Pixel Qi screen is a LCD killer

January 7th, 2011 · 9 Comments · hardware news

Pixel Qi is an exhibitor at CES this year, and I was finally able to see their screen first hand. (I’ve been wanting to see it for a couple years now.) They didn’t have a booth; instead they rented one of the small meeting rooms in the far end of South Hall. It was incredibly [...]

November 5th, 2010 · No Comments · hardware news

Do you know how you can tell it’s a slow day for tech news? It’s when major tech blogs like Engadget cover a boring little e-reader like this one. I’m not trying to be mean; it’s just that this e-reader is really nothing special. I’ve covered Energy Sistem before; they’re a consumer electronics importer in [...]

Reading eBooks: LCD vs. eInk

September 21st, 2010 · 2 Comments · opinion

There is always a lot of discussion about which screen is better for reading ebooks: and LCD screen, which is often less expensive, or eInk-type screens, which are often more expensive. Interestingly, the arguments often revolve around eyestrain, but I’m not so sure that is the real separator.

Copia reveal an LCD tablet

July 29th, 2010 · 2 Comments · hardware news

It’s only 5″, so calling it a tablet is something of a stretch. The Wall Street Journal has the story, but there is hardly any detial or specs for the e-reader. Fortunately, I’ve seen the hardware before. An e-reader with the same image popped up on JCPenney’s website back in November. That e-reader had the [...]

The GHT G2ER e-reader has a 7″ LCD screen, 2GB Flash, as well as pretty broad video, audio, and ebook support. But it doesn’t have a touchscreen, Wifi, or support for ebook DRM. The battery life is also disappointing. If you ask me, this is another converted digital picture frame. I also think it’s the [...]
