The Augusta Chronicle have released a few tidbits of data on the paywall they launched back in December. This newspaper, which bills itself as the oldest Southern paper, is bucking the trend. Page views have risen 5% in the three months since the paywall launched.

Will The Daily follow in the footsteps of Murdoch’s last digital newspaper?
January 31st, 2011 · No Comments · opinion
I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t know about Rupert Murdoch’s previous web based newspaper; this is the first I’d ever heard of it. Back in 1995 New Corp launched iGuide, a pioneering effort to bring daily news coverage to the web. It failed, and Evan Rudowski watched it happen. He wrote an article today [...]
Rupert Murdoch’s tablet newspaper isn’t dead after all
November 21st, 2010 · 2 Comments · hardware news
Women’s Wear Daily had an extensive story this week on The Daily, Rupert Murdoch’s tablet newspaper. (Do you recall the one that was supposed to have been cancelled? I guess it wasn’t.) WWD don’t have much in the way of technical details, but they did say that: News Corp. has spent the last three months [...]

I think Murdoch’s tablet newspaper will fail
August 22nd, 2010 · No Comments · opinion
Peter Kafka has the scoop over at AllThingsDigital. He’s reporting that Greg Clayman, formerly of Viacom, is going to head NewsCorp’s new tablet news unit (or whatever they end up calling it). I’ve pretty much assumed that this would happen, and I’m pretty sure it will also fail. But I never really explained why. It [...]
Local newspaper in Mass. volunteered to be next example of a failed paywall
August 16th, 2010 · No Comments · opinion
Yes, I’m editorializing a little. The NYTimes have the story: The Telegram & Gazette, a New York Times-owned newspaper in Worcester, Mass., said that it would begin charging readers to view some of the local news articles that appear on the paper’s Web site. Starting on Monday, the paper will begin using a metered pay [...]
McSweeney’s found “The Newspaper” to be the best e-reader
August 12th, 2010 · 2 Comments · humor
Mcsweeney’s have a really clever satirical article on how a newspaper is the superior e-reader. Here’s an excerpt: Each device had its strengths. For some it was speed; for others it was capacity. Some were better with shorter articles; others with longer works. And cost, as always, was a factor. But in the end, one [...]

The Knight Center for Journalism are reporting: The Rio de Janeiro-based Jornal do Brasil will stop circulating its 119-year-old print edition and appear only online, O Globo reports. The paper’s owner, Nelson Tanure, says he will set the date for the changeover this week. Before deciding to end the print edition, Tanure tried, unsuccessfully, to [...]
